What appears to be an interruption is often an intervention. ― Rich Wilkerson Jr.
Is it possible to make the most out of unforeseen holiday interruptions? Those things that mess up what we looked forward to with an entirely different plan? This is a predicament I am wrestling with as the most festive season of the year draws near. I love the holiday season.
Thoughts of gathering around the table at Thanksgiving with family began taking shape in my mind. I’d order the turkey, prepare the table, and soak in all the thankful thoughts a mom and grandma can soak in. My mind then traveled forward to the Advent season, church activities, and choosing what gifts to give for Christmas. All those bright holiday catalogues are full of creative ideas.
However, God in His infinite mercy has brought about a change of plans. This holiday will look different. It will be much more low-key than I’d envisioned; overshadowed and interrupted by a health concern which requires surgery and followed by a lengthy recovery. It’s time for me to accept the fact that I will be taking a back seat to the holiday activities. The hosting baton will be handed off to others.
A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. Proverbs 16:9 NKJV
A Shift in Attitude
Don’t let your happiness depend on something you may lose. ― C. S. Lewis
Messed up plans can easily usher in a pity party. That is, unless after talking to the Lord, we choose to shift our attitudes to see God’s plans are meant for our good. After consulting with doctors and learning test results, surgery is the right choice for me. God’s timing to interrupt my plans is for my good. This year it’s time for me to take a holiday timeout.
Expect the Unexpected
Life is a journey interrupted by all sorts of things. Some of them are delightful. Some are far more serious. News of unexpected houseguests or a spontaneous night out with friends can prove quite nice. Whereas a sick child, death of a loved one, nail in a tire, costly furnace repairs, or a dire medical diagnosis push our emotions in the opposite direction.
The Lord is Good Through Every Interruption
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him! Psalms 34:8 NKJV
Will we believe God is good—no matter what dismantles our plans? Can we shift from a mindset of disappointment to one of acceptance and thankfulness? Those who trust in God find a rare sense of peace shows up because they are placing their hope in His sovereign hand of mercy. They know His ways will produce a far better outcome than anything the human mind could design.
It’s perfectly fine to make plans. God gave us creative minds. But let’s do so remembering to leave room for God to redirect our steps. Rather than being disgruntled or throwing a hissy fit, let God be God. See His plan as rising above ours in a positive way. May my current interruption help you to make the most of any holiday interruptions that come your way.
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God. Romans 8a NKJV
Prayer:
Lord, You watch over us with such a loving eye. Help us to receive life interruptions as gifts meant to bless rather than to disappoint. Show us Your wisdom as we trust in Your faithful love and protection. Amen
