Alan describes one candle of Advent 2016

Some of our family will be home for Christmas, but family togetherness doesn’t always mean we are in the same place at the same time. If you are like us, not all of our loved ones live close enough, or can get time enough off work, or have the extra money, to be home for Christmas. Some of our family lives in Spain; other family members will spend Christmas in Australia this year. We will miss those who can’t be here, but we still plan to be “with” them on December 25th.

It’s simple enough to visit the app store provided by mobile phone carriers, or internet providers, and download the necessary apps to stay connected with the people who really matter most in our lives during the season when we all turn our hearts and thoughts homeward. The season of family togetherness can still be embraced.

Three ways our family focuses on togetherness, rather than feeling sorry for ourselves while separated by mega miles, is credited to the age of technology. The internet is an even better blessing at Christmas.

  1. Skype allows us to connect for free. It’s video option lets us see each other and watch our grandson open his gift from us. Life is good.
  2. Whats App is another free-of-charge way to stay in message contact with our relatives, whether in the USA or around the globe.
  3. Face-time on our smart phones is a third way we can “see” our family any time; but especially at Christmas. The use of technology today makes it easy to feel the embrace of family during the holiday season. Feeling apart is not part of our Christmas.
