Faith, hope, or love. Which of these three virtues is greatest?

1 Corinthians 13:13 (NIV) makes the answer plain. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Valentine’s Day has brought heart thoughts to the forefront of our minds. We all want to feel love’s embrace but we don’t always know how to give or receive this greatest gift. The question is how does God want us to actively express agape (unconditional) love in relationships? There’s more to it than warm fuzzy feelings, gifts or dinners in fine restaurants. And there’s certainly no abusive language or behaviors.

Let’s Dig Deeper

Romans 12:9-10 (NIV) instructs us to be sincere when expressing love: Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

We are to be honest, showing genuine concern, even when speaking a truth that is difficult. The concept of being devoted to one another is another way of saying, “I’ve got your best interests at heart; I’ve got your back.” Sincere affection is not self serving. It is focused on the well-being of others even if it means a sacrifice of time or resources.

What about Faith and Hope?

We can’t ignore the importance of faith or hope. Both are activated by love. First, the love of God pours into our hearts and allows us to feel accepted by our Heavenly Father. Faith springs up which in turn allows hope to be birthed. Whatever burdens were weighing us down are suddenly lightened. It’s not uncommon for smiles to appear, even in the midst of difficult circumstances, when we believe God is working all things out for our good.

Simple Ways to Display Love to Others

  1. Be a good listener.
  2. Send a note, make a phone call, or arrange a time for lunch.
  3. Choose words carefully. Critical remarks easily wound while encouraging words, from a sincere heart, sweeten the day.
  4. Pray for any needs mentioned. Divine intervention accomplishes much.

If God declares love the greatest virtue, it seems reasonable that we agree with Him and do our best to show love as we’d want to be loved ourselves.
