Never underestimate the power of love. This simple four letter word holds tremendous takeaway value. But if misused, causes great harm.

Four letter words are often, and rightfully so, given a bad rap. Unless we train our thoughts toward loving conversations, our go-to language can be quite foul and tear down others. The good news is we are given the freedom to choose how we will speak to one another. The power of the tongue is mighty force. It’s a beautiful thing when we remember the words we express are to be precious gifts we give.

God is love

1 John 4:7a Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.

Love originated with God. Since love is God’s idea, it’s something we should seek to understand. Once understood we can give this gift away without expecting something in return.

1 Corinthians 13:1-8a is the best way to wrap our minds around the concept of love.

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

We are Image Bearers

We are created in God’s image. This makes us image bearers. After reading the above Scripture passages, it’s time to examine ourselves. How well we are expressing the power of love? What area causes us the most trouble? Do we keep records of wrongs, get easily angered, or lose patience with the very people we love the most? Are we jealous, or untrustworthy? There are a lot of things to think about when it comes to the power of love.

There’s Room to Grow

God knows we are imperfect people. None of us get love down as perfect as God defines love. But His grace allows us to try and try again. If we humbly admit those shortcomings, and commit a verse of Scripture to memory as a reminder of His love for us, our ability to gift that love to others will increase mightily.

Happy Valentine’s Day, but more than that, let’s carry the power of love into every day.

Prayer:

Lord of Love, give us hearts to love as You love. Thank you for grace that allows for second chances one-hundred fold. We are a blessed people because of Your great love. Create in us hearts that demonstrate the power of love to those we live amongst.
